Can I Claim Florida Unemployment After Closing My Small Business?
“I own a business & am closing the business due to lack of business, hence no income.
Can I file for unemployment after closing the business?”
To be eligible for Florida unemployment benefits, you must become unemployed through no fault of your own. This usually means you were laid off or the place you worked went out of business or filed bankruptcy due to mounting debt. If you own the business and decide to close the business down you likley are not eligible for unemployment benefits because you essentially quit your job. The key determinig factor is control. When you work for a company and are laid off you do not have control over the loss of your job. If you quit your job you generally are not eligible for unemployment.

If I own a business and get a weekly check for being on the board, but I am not actually working anymore, can I draw unemployment if the company falls on hard times and cannot pay me anymore? I am 69 and draw Social Security.
